Possible breaking of community site ahead

Ladies and gentlemen, stand back.

I’m learning how to programme, and I’m aiming to update the community pages to be what I want. I may break something very, very hard. I do apologise if I kill the community for a bit. :)

Motivation Monday — Focus

A cheery little infographic I found describing one of the ways to focus.

Focus, like money, is something we all wish for and don’t have enough of.

What do you do to focus?

How we’re making money

Sometimes little kids can be the most perceptive when it comes to business, and they don’t even know it. While I was talking with some of the kids at the school about what I do, and the company, one kid asked, “So, if you help people for cheap or free, how do you make money?”

Nearly ready!

I am excited, and here is why:

1.) We are nearly ready with the store!

Opening up a bank account can go quickly or slowly, depending on your cash reserve. As you all know, we move slow around here because money is tight, and we don’t want to crash and burn the company before it’s even off the ground. So, we took the slow route, and it’s nearly there. As in, one of my paychecks away from being fully funded and opened. (We still have a little work to do setting up and fine tuning things, though…)

2.) We’re getting a new merchant for the store!

Emily Cotton Cram (known as Squidmonster from Etsy) will be joining us to sell her amazing sculptures and artwork in the store.

I’m a huge fan of her Quetzalcoatl sculpture.

3.) We are getting a merchant agreement set up!

OK, so this one doesn’t deserve an exclamation point, but I had to keep with the trend. I’m currently working with a lawyer to put together a first draft of a merchant agreement. Emily, as our first merchant, will look it over and make sure it’s understandable and “fair”. What I’m striving for is the goal of Insanitek: help independent makers with a passion for science and/or technology get a good foothold on their business while also keeping Insanitek afloat. It’ll be a community effort, so it’s going to be really, really hard to find a good balance that will be “fair” to most parties. We’re trying our best.

Motivational Mondays {10.June.2013}

I don’t think I’ve ever properly introduced myself here. My name is Alesi, and I’m a networking addict. I’ve always loved hearing people’s stories and connecting them to things they need to succeed. So, I went to school for marketing. I decided to do public relations (PR) and networking as my own business so I can have the best of the world I want.

This weekend, however, I was feeling a bit discouraged during business take-off. It’s a LOT of work to set up a business. I needed a little inspiration, so I perused the web to find some.

I found this image with the quote on a random website when looking for “motivation” for a completely unrelated topic.

That got me back on track. I want to live like few dare — to enjoy what I do daily. Don’t you?

Financial Fridays: Advice from Jon Oringer on venture capitalists

I found this gem on LinkedIn, by Jon Oringer, the CEO of Shutterstock. In this article, Oringer tells us to struggle to make things work without venture capitalists for as long as possible.

Just a note: If you don’t have an account, you really should sign up for a free one. There is a lot of good business advice, friendly people, and good groups to join to bounce ideas off of.

For those of you that don’t have a LinkedIn account, here is the meat of the article.

In memorandum: Garfield, the Turkey Cat

This gallery contains 31 photos.

First off, I’d like to apologise for there being no updates here on the blog lately. When you hear why, you’ll understand. Let me tell you the story of Garfield, lovingly called Turkey for his initial round shape. 5 years … Continue reading

Motivational Mondays

I found this infographic on Funders and Founders. While some will object to how it’s biased toward men, there is one key feature here: They worked their asses off for their dreams.

Dream big. Dare to fail.

Without a pity handout, it's still possible.

Sweat, blood and tears can bring about a lot of changes. Don’t give up, and don’t expect a handout. You can do it.

Aside

Starting up a business is difficult. We’re doing it now, and we thought we had everything under control. So, we really do understand where you’re coming from.

For that reason, we want to start a weekly post on Friday’s we can call “Financial Fridays”. It’s aimed to offer some business advice — mostly financial, and give you a place to put a “beggars” link up in the comments. This could be an advert of a special you have going on, a donations button, links to some freelance articles you have to sell, etc. The best things to link us to are the places where we don’t have to buy anything. Such as, you getting paid for page views on a Yahoo! Contributor account or some such. Other good things to link are things from an affiliate account.

So, lets get on that. Link me! ;-)
